Learn about sand skiing in the desert of the Emirates
Sand skiing may have been invented on the coast of California, but sand dunes in the Arabian Desert in the UAE have taken this sport to new heights as Emirati youth, residents and visitors are increasingly accepting the sport.
The skiers slide on a sand ramp on a board the same size as the ice latches. Although the sports professionals can stand while skiing on the sand dunes, beginners have to lie on their back or abdomen. The best skiers can achieve 40 mph (64 km / hour).
The desert edge of Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the UAE is the perfect place to learn to ski on the sand, as well
Several good areas are found on the outskirts of Dubai, but the best spot to practice this sport is Liwa Oasis, a group of nomadic villages located about 95 miles (150 km) south-west of Abu Dhabi, off the E11.
The surrounding sand dunes include a giant sand oasis called the Terrible Hill, which stretches over 900 feet (300 meters) above the desert land 15 miles (25 km) from Mazira.
